Baby Blanket Bingo

My mother and my friend, Amy, are hosting a baby shower for me this upcoming Sunday. Although it is only Tuesday, this shower has already proved interesting.

Amy has been trying to coordinate the shower for about a month. Whenever she tried to get together with my mother to plan it, my mother had some sort of "thing" going on where she was unavailable. Amy took it upon herself to book a site and start thinking about food. My dad reported to me that there was some sort of summit going on between the two of them this past Sunday at my mom's house.

Amy emailed me Monday, relieved that my mother agreed to take half of the tasks for the shower. According to Amy, Marlene claims I will go into labor this week because it is the full moon. "That's just wishful thinking," she added. I agreed. My mother likes high drama at family events. For example, she developed some sort of leg ailment about a week before my wedding. She couldn't move too well for the event and insisted on telling EVERYONE at the reception that my poor brother, Peter, had to help her put on her pantyhose.

Yesterday, I received a phone call from Marlene. She was at work.

Me: Hello?

Marlene: What color?

Me: What color what?

Marlene: black, red and white or blue?

Me: Black, red and white would be cool. They provide a high contrast.

Marlene: Okay, blue.

Me: What is this for?

Marlene: I gotta go. I got four phone lines with parents on them.

I am thinking this may have to do with shower decorations, but there may have also been some sort of freebie at the pediatric office. I really don't know.

My mother has also made the last few weeks of my pregnancy exciting by trying to assign my due date. If she were a bookie, she'd be racking in the cash. As I have mentioned before, she is convinced I am going this week. My husband thinks that she is saying this because she doesn't want to deal with the shower. According to Marlene, if I don't go this week, I will go on March 15, the Ides of March, because I'm "literal". If that doesn't work out, then the baby will hang in a week after his due date and be born on April 1st because "that's the way your kid would be, Kim."

There has been no mention of St. Joseph's Day. I thought she would be all over that because she is Italian.

I am looking forward to more late pregnancy wackiness from Marlene. After all, tomorrow is her day off and she knows I have a OB appointment.
